New Fashion Territory: Art Purses

Art Purses

You probably haven’t heard of Kathleen Dustin. I hadn’t even heard of her until a few days ago, when a friend of mine who knows that I’m always looking for interesting takes on fashion passed along her website to me.

Kathleen studied mathematics at University but realized she had missed her true calling as an artist and went back to school to get her MFA. However, believing that sculptures “just sit in the corner and gather dust”, she wanted to make art that was more interactive, so she chose purses and jewelry.

Her designs are whimsical, and strikingly beautiful (even if you wouldn’t necessarily find it wearable, per se), and I find myself drawn to the Nigella pod purse. Paired with a tailored, monochrome look and some seriously glam heels, the Nigella bag would be amazing and beyond unique (each bag is handcrafted in numbers more limited than Birkin bags).

If the organic-inspired bags aren’t for you, check out the “Contemplating Yesterday” tote– the silhouette and structure are eye-catching and the rich colours are perfect for evening events.

Contemplating Yesterday tote

I’d love to see a risk-taking yet superbly elegant celeb like Nicole Kidman carry a bag like this for an evening out!

South Beach Sagamore Hotel: Botox and Lox Party

This past Friday Vlad and I were invited to attend an ultra posh party at the glamorous Sagamore Hotel in South Beach, Florida on behalf of Glam. Not sure what to expect, but knowing we had to look South Beach ravishing, Vlad was dressed head to toe in Theory along with Tod’s shoes while I (snuggly) pulled off a stunning David Meister dress. The posh party was held in the Penthouse Suite of the Sagamore Hotel, which overlooks South Beach, and was attended by a a great crowd, including Dr. Lee Gibstein, Olivia Chantecaille, Beth Shapiro from Marchesa, Stylist Ann Caruso, Sagamore Owner Jennifer Sazant, Iron Chef winner Michelle Bernstein, and many more. Vlad and I were totally taken off guard though to find out that a majority of the attendees were at the party to celebrate a fine weekend with Vivre. If you are not familiar with Vivre, it is a posh online store and catalog which sells knock-out designer goods. In one of the bungalow’s poolside, Vivre had a small makeshift shop set up for people to browse and buy goods. I was eying some beautiful Nancy Gonzalez croc bags and gorgeous jewels and jems, while being a little put off at my recent spending that was keeping me from purchasing something. If we were not lucky enough to be invited to this party, we also had the pleasure of meeting of meeting Vivre’s CEO, Eva Jeanbart-Lorenzotti. Although she was pressed for time, giving one interview after the next, Eva had a brief moment to meet with Vlad and I. This woman is a fashion guru, a business genius, and a stunning lady. We were so happy to get the chance to meet her and so many others!

Read more details about the party and view more pictures below!

Sounds too good to be true right? Wrong, there was so much more. I grew up in South Florida, I know they throw parties that people only dream of. This party had everything, from the location to the treatments. The penthouse suite had a flat screen TV (like that mattered) and mod white leather couches. You could simply snap your finger while laying on the couch, and poof, there was someone to give you a foot rub. The Penthouse Terrace offered the most pristine view of both the pool and ocean. What was offered to us? Here is where you will get really jealous. Botox courtesy of Dr. Gibstein, a Bal Harbour based plastic surgeon. I opted for no Botox, but spoke with Dr. Gibstein who told me that my lips never needed an injection. Talk about a boost of confidence. Vlad dined on the huge array of bagel, lox, and cream cheese while others feasted on made-to-order omelette’s on the terrace. Other options were Beach Body Ready Scrubs, Mojito Manicures + Pedicures, Caviar Pearl Facials, and Brazilian Waxing. You could choose to have many of the treatments either outdoors or indoors.

So you want to know how we really felt about the party? Great! Vlad and I really felt like the party was an eye opener. When we arrived at the posh gathering we did feel a little out of place. Vlad and I only knew each other, but we were determined to mingle. Sitting outside in a lux outdoor chair while sipping on our drink, we felt like the smelly kids. People popped outside and sat across from us, but then immediately went back inside. I did a quick sniff of myself, thought I smelled ok, and then overheard a conversation why no one was outside. Whew, it was not because of Vlad and I, it was because after Botox you need to stay out of the sun. A Botox party is truly the next posh party; for a weekend with the girls, Bachelorette party, or even recommended for a divorce party. This was a totally trendy party. Vlad and I still feel like we have young skin, although I began to closely look in the mirror and found a line or two on my forehead, but that is besides the point that I felt like running back to Dr. G and asking for a touch up! Vlad and I fit perfectly in at the bungalow showing of Vivre products. The gals in the bungalow were really shocked at Vlad’s knowledge of all the bags. He sure made me proud. We ended the party with a touch of sun, humid-struck hair, but feeling very snazzy nonetheless.

Special thanks to Glam for inviting us to such a fabulous party!

See all of the pictures on the Purse Forum here (including a shot of Vlad and I after the party, with not so great hair and lots of squinting which will undoubtedly result in needing Botox sooner than later)

Fergie signs with Kipling for own handbag line

As we learn from Fab Sugar, Stacy “Fergie” Ferguson is getting her own handbag line. As if that wasn’t bad enough, she’s getting two collections to waste our time. For the sweet love of everything that is decent in this world, WHY?

“As with every project that I’m involved with, I plan to put all of my heart and creativity into this one, and I’m thrilled to work with such an amazing brand. I look forward to putting my personal touch on each and every design in my signature Kipling® collections.”

Fergie, you lack creativity in what you try to pass as music. Don’t waste the little artistic talent you possess on something you have absolutely no clue about.

Handbag as Real Estate: Where do you live?

Picture via NYtimes Fashion Magazine

The lovely Maxter on tPF brought this picture to my attention, which is an article as a picture and is literally worth thousands (if not millions) of words. It is clear that handbags are ruling the fashion world because of their necessity and ability to show off some style. Armand Limnander has created the breakdown of a handbag real estate map for New York City in the NYtimes Fashion Magazine. I find it odd that the most expensive bag chosen is a Chanel Croc Evening Handbag, which runs the huge and hefty price of $56.50 per square inch while the Hermes Birkin choosen ’simple’ so to speak. We all know the handbag Queen of them all, is the Hermes Birkin, which if you are into croc and diamond encrusted will run over $100,000.

Where do I live you may ask, well I am an Upper West Sider. Always have been, always will be one (at heart). Granted I do not own a Python Burberry Handbag, but I have a few tricks up my sleeve.

Where do you live on the Handbag Real Estate List?

Organic clothing enters realm of high fashion

No one ever traded lunch with me. You see the commercials and hear the stories of kids trading twinkies for a candy bar. Not with my recycled brown paper lunch bag. Organic green pepper cut up, organic apples, wheat free bread with organic free range chicken with a light hint of Canola mayo, and some wheat free dairy free ginger snaps (organic of course). But I wouldn’t change it for the world. My family is forward thinking and healthy. Organic is now the ‘hip’ way to eat and looks as if organic is now the ‘hip’ way to dress. (image from Under the Canopy)

Organic clothing is no longer suited just for hippies — high fashion and big brands are going green, too.

High fashion is going granola. But not the grunge of hippie yoga wear and grainy hemp T-shirts typically associated with organic clothes.

Think soft soy dresses, cropped organic terry jackets and slim-fit organic denim jeans to pair with stilettos, not flip flops.

Consumers worried about ingesting harmful pesticides have long been purchasing organic foods. But the philosophy is slowly hitting mainstream clothing retailers as experts warn about the dangers pesticides pose to the environment.

Whether shoppers are buying eco-friendly because it’s trendy or because they hope to preserve Mother Earth, they no longer have to sacrifice fashion for philosophy. With major retailers like Target, Victoria’s Secret, H&M and Nike joining the green trend, there’s something for fashionistas of every price range in 2007.

”We’re fashion first. The fact that they’re organic is a value added product,” says Marci Zaroff, founder of Under the Canopy, one of the world’s largest producers of organic clothing.

Organic cotton, which makes up 95 percent of organic fabrics, is the driving force behind the trend. Global organic cotton sales increased 119 percent, from $245 million to $583 million between 2001 and 2005. Sales are expected to reach more than $2 billion by the end of 2008, according to the Organic Exchange, a nonprofit trade association that works to expand the use of organically grown cotton.

Read the rest of the article below! Thanks dad again!!!!

Though more retailers are considering organic cotton, it currently makes up for less than 1 percent of cotton produced in the world. Designers are also experimenting with eco-friendly fabrics made of bamboo, soy, Ingeo (corn) and hempsilk.

”The market is really expanding in large because a number of very large retailers are actually going to have a lot of product available in 2007,” said Rebecca Calahan Klein, the president of California-based Organic Exchange.

Target, which carries a select number of organic baby clothes, is expanding its line this year. (Sam’s Club and Wal-Mart are among the top five brands that use the most organic cotton globally, according to Organic Exchange.)

Victoria’s Secret will also add organic cotton to its collection this year, Klein said.

Nike, which has been using organic cotton for several years, is one of the world’s largest retail users of organic cotton. Spokeswoman Morgan Shaw says 52 percent of the garments the company manufactured last year contained at least some organic material.

Costs are slightly higher, but comparable. A men’s vintage-style organic cotton T-shirt at Wal-Mart is $9.83, while a similar regular cotton T sells for $8.83. Levi Strauss & Co. started offering organic denim jeans in select stores in November — $68 for their Red Tab jean compared to $40 for nonorganic.

ACCIDENTAL ACTIVISM

The look and feel of the clothes are so fashion-forward that many clients don’t even realize they’re buying organic. They just like the style, says Zaroff, a perfect spokeswoman for greenwear.

A yoga devotee with long, dirty-blonde hair and lots of hippie jewelry, Zaroff looks years younger than 39. She talks about Al Gore’s movie on global warming and other environmental issues at her Boca Raton office, where she is working on a new high-fashion line debuting later this year.

The 108 line of upscale street wear includes dresses in muted tones made of soft soy and organic cotton voile.

She founded her company in 1996 when organic wear was little more than a hemp seed. She says it will do $10 million in sales this year.

”It was frumpy and boxy and crunchy and all those things people don’t want,” Zaroff said of older organic clothing. “The consumer was ready. The seed was planted with organic food and beauty products.”

High-end designers like Stella McCartney are including organic fabrics in their collections and celebrity entrepreneurs are also joining the trend. U2’s Bono launched his socially conscious clothing line, Edun, in 2005 in an attempt to increase trade and create sustainable employment in places like Africa. About 30 percent of the company’s clothes are made from organic cotton.

HOLLYWOOD POTENTIAL

With celebrities endorsing hybrid cars, vegetarian diets and launching their own eco-friendly clothing lines, experts say it was only a matter of time before the Hollywood trend caught on with fashion.

”It clearly has gotten more attention now because it’s not just an industry sector. It’s a global phenomenon,” said Marshal Cohen, chief analyst for the NPD Group, a market-research firm. “We’re seeing it in cars, we’re seeing it in homes products, apparel, food.”

He says consumers are willing to spend 20 percent more for eco-friendly products like organic clothes.

POLLUTING

It takes about a third a of a pound of pesticides to produce one cotton T-shirt. About 180 to 300 pounds of chemical fertilizer are used on one acre of cotton in the United States.

About 90 percent of the fertilizer doesn’t stay on the plant, but washes off, ending up in water supplies and habitat, says Klein.

Retailers say it’s not just about buying organic, it’s about the entire process. Under The Canopy uses a dye factory fueled by rice husks instead of fossil fuels. Growing organic also requires crop rotation, meaning a field that this year is used for cotton could be used for food the next.

”So if we get a large amount of cotton production moved to organic, we’ll also end up expanding the world’s access to organic food supply,” Klein said.

Derek Lam Fall 2007

Derek Lam pieces pepper my closet; absolutely love the clean look and always rely on Derek Lam for a sophisticated and perfect outfit. Loose and flowy is out, fitted and streamlined is in. After being outside and active all summer, we all have a rocking body for fall (at least in our dream world and dream minds). Show it off in skinny and tight black leather and suede leggings, stockings paired with mini skirts and dresses, and cocktail dresses that Derek Lam has sent out for Fall 2007. While this line does not completely wow me, I have favorites that I completely adore. Overall, a thumb up on the entire line but two big thumbs up on the items above.
